With day jobs and daily routines, life can begin to seem mundane and predictable. For the free spirits that dream of new places and open roads, dropping everything and setting out on a cross-country drive with your dog doesn’t seem like a bad idea. But a lot of people are simply looking for small ways to bring more spontaneity into their lives.
So how do you then break out of routine and add something new to your life? Here are 3 tips to shake up your daily life a bit and gain some new perspective.
1. Wake up early and go for a (nonmandatory ) bike ride or run.
When the world is still sleeping and only birds are awake, it’s a good time to clear your head and see that the world still exists when you’re going about your daily tasks. This little change can help you gain a new perspective for your day. You don’t even need to do it regularly, only when you feel like something needs to change.
2. Go somewhere new
We all have our favorite places that we frequent on weekly basis. Whether that’s a specific route we always take to work, a park, or a beach we go to on the weekend, or a restaurant we grab lunch at. If life seems to repeat itself over and over, it’s because it does. So break the cycle! Go to a new place that somebody recommended or you drove past but never went in. The new experience will be worth it and, who knows, maybe you’ll love it?
3. Take an inventory of your life
Up to this point, most of these tips were relatively easy things to try out. This one though is for “advanced users”. This one is for the people who followed every tip, watched every motivational video available on the internet, and listened to all the Tony Robbins podcasts. But you still feel like something’s off. My advice is to do something drastic. No, I don’t mean to dye your hair red, I mean take a real inventory of your life. See where the pain points lie. What parts of your life bore you to death? What gives you anxiety? Or the opposite, what makes you feel excited and alive? When you start to find these things out about yourself, it’ll be easier to see what works for you.
Is there something you do or change in your daily life when you feel like you need something new?
